Dr Rafiq Khan

Dr Rafiq Khan is a Paediatrician practising at Melomed in Gatesville, Cape Town.

Dr Khan was born in Cape Town, but he completed his Paediatric degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Dr Khan has been in family practice for over 17 years. During these years, he has gained substantial experience dealing with all paediatric problems, from birth to late adolescent care, up to the age of 18. He treats a range of conditions, including chronic cough, itchy skin, and eye and nasal symptoms, Asthma, Eczema, Allergic Rhinitis and food allergies. He also provides special attention to children who have learning difficulties as manifestations of underlying conditions such as Epilepsy, Attention Deficit Disorder with or without Hyperactivity, or any other undiagnosed medical disorder.

As a paediatrician, he attends to all kinds of births, including normal full-term births, premature births and any neonatal difficulties which may arise after birth. He also provides routine follow-ups of children after birth to ensure their growth and development conforms to expected norms. Dr Khan is available to attend paediatric emergencies and intensive care for premature and low birth weight newborns.

Dr Khan is very passionate about ensuring that babies and young children receive the immunisations that they need to stay healthy. For this reason, he provides a full immunisation service (subject to medical scheme cover) as recommended by the South African government. He also provides extended immunisation cover (EPI) as recommended by the World Health Organization. (WHO).

Dr Khan recently launched a combined service to deal with the epidemic problem of childhood obesity and its many comorbid associated problems. He has teamed up with a dietician and a team of biokineticists to make this initiative a reality.

Dr Khan fully understands the need to provide a rapid service for children who are acutely ill and need immediate attention. Therefore, he prioritises the care of the acutely ill child.
